The Resilient Spring
A piece on EMDR, Counselling, and Emotional Renewal by Perdita Heasman
🌸 Moving into the Light:
As the days lengthen and the frost begins to thaw, we find ourselves at the threshold of Spring. In the world of counselling psychology, we often view the change of seasons as more than just a meteorological shift; it is a profound metaphor for the human capacity for renewal.
After the restorative “hibernation” of winter, spring invites us to step back into the light with a sense of pace that feels sustainable and grounded. This month, we explore how we can use the principles of EMDR (Eye Movement Desensitisation and Reprocessing) and mindfulness to clear the “winter clutter” from our minds.

🧠 EMDR & The “Spring Clean” of the Mind
EMDR therapy is often described as a way to help the brain’s natural healing process. Just as we might clear out a garden to make room for new growth, EMDR helps us process “stuck” memories or traumas that may be clouding our current experience.
Focusing on Adaptive Information:
During the spring, we focus on Adaptive Information Processing. This means taking the difficult lessons of the past and integrating them so they no longer feel like heavy burdens, but rather like the soil from which our resilience grows.
Reflection Point: What mental “clutter” are you ready to compost this season? What new perspective are you hoping to bloom?

🌿 Finding Your Pace: The Psychology of Slowing Down
In a world that often demands we “spring into action,” counseling psychology reminds us of the importance of Paced Transition.
Gentle Awakening: Don’t feel pressured to have peak energy immediately. Like a seed, growth happens beneath the surface before it is visible.
Nervous System Regulation: Use the “Butterfly Hug” (a self-administered EMDR tapping technique) when you feel overwhelmed by the increasing pace of the season.
The Light Effect: Increased sunlight naturally boosts serotonin. Spend 10 minutes each morning in the natural light to help regulate your circadian rhythm and mood.
✨ Calm & Grounding Exercise: The 5-4-3-2-1 Spring Edition
When you feel the “rush” of the world starting to pull at you, try this grounding technique outdoors:
5 things you see: The green of new buds, the shifting clouds, the texture of a tree trunk.
4 things you feel: The warmth of the sun on your skin, the breeze, the ground beneath your feet.
3 things you hear: Birds returning, wind in the leaves, the distant hum of life.
2 things you smell: Damp earth, fresh rain, or early blossoms.
1 thing you taste: The freshness of the air or a cool sip of water.
