Positive Self-Talk

Life Coach Brian Tregunna explains the importance of positive self-talk and shares some advice on how to achieve it, regardless of circumstances.

We all have conversations with ourselves. Sometimes we externalise our thoughts when talking with other people but most of our self-talk is internalised as inner dialogue and not heard by other people.

So …

We are the only ones who hear every single word that we think and say. Importantly, our unconscious mind is listening and, because it’s programmed to protect us, it will quickly trigger a fight, flight or freeze response if it there is a ‘perceived threat’. So, in effect, we create our own self-harm through what we think and say.

As the renowned Life Coach, Tad James, said, Our words don’t describe the world we live in, they determine it!”.  Our thoughts and words tend to become largely self-fulfilling. Negative self-talk creates negative feelings and outcomes, whereas positive self-talk tends to lead to more positive emotions and life experiences.

‘Whether you think you can or think you can’t, you’re right!’ (Henry Ford)

Now, think about that!

Here are some simple tools and techniques to help you bring negative self-talk under control:

  1. Be self-aware of what you are thinking and saying. Tune-in to your inner dialogue.
  2. When you hear yourself saying something negative, regardless of whether it is justified or not, tell yourself to literally ‘STOP IT!’.
  3. Picture a roadside STOP sign and touch or tap an appropriate, comfortable part of your body, such as a knuckle or ear lobe.

Then use the ‘Traffic Lights’ technique to move forward in a more positive manner:
