Grounding

Life Coach Brian Tregunna outlines how to use ‘Grounding’ to reduce stress.

Grounding is a mindfulness technique that help to calm the mind and break the cycle of chronic stress. It helps to instantly deal with anxiety by putting you firmly into the present, in a positive way. This is very beneficial as, when we feel anxious, we often get caught up in stress inducing thoughts.

Grounding develops sensory awareness so that we are more strongly connected with the environment we are in at that moment.

The technique uses all five senses to make sure we are ‘in the present.’

  • Sit comfortably and take your time.
  • Relax your shoulders and take a couple of deep breaths.

Say out loud:

  • 5 things you can see right now. Focus in on the fine detail with laser-like vision.
  • 4 things you can Strengthen the level of your tactile intensity.
  • 3 things you can Turn up the volume.
  • 2 things you can Sharpen up your sense of smell.
  • 1 thing you can Increase your sense of smell.

You can move to pick things up, eat, smell etc if you think that would help.

Now take a long deep breath to complete the process.

There should be no anxiety.

If there is, repeat the process but take it more slowly and

make it even stronger.

There is much more that can be done to manage stress, control anxiety and improve personal resilience, such as learning about mind-management, releasing negative emotions and building your self-confidence.
