Some of you may be wondering what Solution Focused Hypnotherapy is and how does it work.

Firstly let’s look at the Hypnotic element,

Hypnosis, despite the name, isn’t a sleeping state, it’s more akin to being awake and very relaxed. During this state you will feel more focused on what I am saying (lots of positive affirmations and positive suggestions) than you will on your surroundings. This is rather like being absorbed by a nice story on the radio. When that happens to us we pay less attention to the chair we are sitting in, or maybe the traffic on the road outside and we can imagine the scene being described by the narrator of the story. In hypnosis we call this a guided image. Just as with the story on the radio, if you needed to pay attention to something in your house, you would instantly switch your attention to that for example the doorbell if it rang. Hypnosis is not mind control, you remain in full control.

Trance is very similar to daydreaming. Have you ever driven from A to B and not really recalled the journey as your mind wondered and yet you drove perfectly safely? Have you ever been so absorbed in a task that you lost track of time? That’s what trance feels like. Think of the daydream state and being completely alert to your surroundings as being part of a continuum rather than an either or state and this makes it easier to understand how you can be in a trance and yet not feel out of control or out of touch with your immediate environment.

Now lets understand Solution focused work,

Solution Focused Hypnotherapy is a combination of hypnosis and ‘talking therapy’. It is a modern therapy which utilises the latest neuroscience and guided relaxation in trance to allow the mind to relax and focus on useful suggestions and thoughts.

The therapist helps the client to identify and focus on solutions, rather than the problem, enabling them to make significant positive changes in their lives. We focus on moving the client towards their goals in small manageable steps – leaving the past in the past and focusing on the future. Unlike other forms of Hypnotherapy, Solution Focused Hypnotherapy uses a specific structure, which incorporates several aspects of Solution Focused Brief Therapy (SFBT) and combines these with an understanding of how the brain works. Solution Focused Hypnotherapy is also different because it doesn’t require the therapist to ‘dig into’ a person’s past, as this is not deemed necessary to help the person formulate plans and best hopes for how they want to move forward in their lives in the future. The process is a collaboration therefore full client commitment is important.
